When is TD promising?
Transdisciplinary research (TDR) is a promising approach when it comes to tackling complex societal challenges. However, transdisciplinary approaches are not suitable for every type of research.
Aspects that help to decide whether TDR is promising
TDR involves scientists from different disciplines and actors from different sectors and co-produces knowledge to address societal challenges. But for which goals and under which contextual conditions should one engage intensively with stakeholders? This question is particularly important as both researchers and stakeholders have limited time and financial resources.
TDR is particularly promising:
when normative questions and changes are to be addressed;
when knowledge is needed that enables action;
when the issues at stake are controversial (please bear in mind that working on controversial or conflictual issues requires in-depth facilitation and sometimes mediation skills);
when the diversity of actors is high;
if several actors have an interest in the topic and the goals of the project.
