GIS and spatial analysis in interdisciplinary research
Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research
Were you ever thinking it would be useful to create compelling maps and visuals to present your data and analysis results to a broader audience more effectively? Were you ever hoping to be able to extend your statistical analysis of demographic and epidemiological data through means of geospatial analytics? How much would you learn from studying spatial distributions and spatial patterns of mortality and how these relate to environmental conditions and population characteristics?
This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle these and many other tasks. It is designed as an introductory class to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) suitable for graduate and postgraduate students with interest in research ranging from social to environmental sciences as well as interdisciplinary settings including demography, epidemiology and data science. Students will learn about GIS tools and their underlying principles and how to apply GIS to analytical and mapping-related tasks.
The course will introduce basic theoretical and practical elements of GIS and the geospatial sciences that are important to get started on an independent GIS project, handling and managing geospatial data, creating maps and conducting GIS-based analysis. Students will work in QGIS software on tasks typically encountered in their research or in GIS-related work generally. The concepts discussed during lectures will be directly put into practice to better understand underlying mechanics, results, problems and important implications resulting from decisions made based on such results.

ipd Summer academy
Institute for Peace and Dialogue
Institute for Peace and Dialogue (IPD) is proud to announce the International Summer Academy, which are to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Its image as one of the most favourable places for traveling has made it more interesting to offer an exited and comprehensive program for our participants. Nowadays unfortunately several frozen or ongoing conflicts between or within states still exist. Conflicts are different and if we look to the world mankind, how they are facing many new challenges, coupled with new dangerous situations, i.e. terrorist acts, non-legal arming of conflict sides, re-determination of borders, establishing new countries in the world map, non-providing territorial integrity, trafficking of arms, drugs and human; disputes on the implementation of transnational energy projects, democratization and false elections, revolution and internal political conflicts, armed guerrilla movements, violation and discrimination by nationalists, world economic crisis, climate change and unsafely biodiversity etc. Unfortunately, the list is long. Conflicts are related and an integral part of human beings, as conflicts cause violation of human rights. Existing conflicts weaken every kind of cooperation between nations, states and Institutions. Without lasting mutual cooperation and understanding, the future prosperity of the world would remain only as a good dream. Taking into consideration of peaceful behaviour and engagements, we can make a decision on the strict belief, that opportunities for solving all kind of conflicts are feasible.

Summer School: Inter- and Transdisciplinary Integration in Science, Policy and Practice
ETH Zurich
Description
Integration is an integral part of inter- and transdisciplinary research. It implies the co-production and synthesis towards a problem and its potential solutions. It is a fundamental process when collaborating across disciplines and thematic fields and working at the interface between science, policy and practice. Drawing on empirical cases students work in a hands-on experiential setting.
Expected learning outcomes
Meeting environmental and societal challenges requires responses that integrate a wide range of perspectives from different disciplines (i.e. interdisciplinary integration), as well as from science, policy and practice (i.e. transdisciplinary integration).
Integration, in this context, is an integral part of inter- and transdisciplinary research. It implies the co-production and synthesis of different knowledges, perspectives, insights, interests, expectations and collaborative approaches towards a problem and its potential solutions. It is a fundamental process in research when collaborating across scientific disciplines (e.g., natural and social sciences) and thematic fields (e.g., policy analysis) and working at the interface between science, policy and practice. The summer school offers a hands-on experiential setting together with empirical cases situated at that interface.
At the end of the summer school students are able to:
Understand and analyse different theories, concepts, methods and tools of integration and assess their strengths and weaknesses.
Apply methods and tools of integration to selected case studies and critically reflect on their potentials and limitations.
Communicate and collaborate with others in different contexts and forms, bringing in own viewpoints, recognising others, and synthesising ideas.
Date: 18 - 22 August

Team Science Workshop
Team Science Consulting
With new discoveries and technologies over the past few decades, we have seen an exponential increase in the scale and complexity of scientific research. Funding agencies have responded by shifting more and more resources into collaborative research. The result has been more team science being done by both small and large teams, rather than individual researchers. Collaborations bring additional challenges, both to the researchers and to individuals managing projects, programs, and teams. Whether you are a PI, a project/program manager or a research development professional, questions abound: How do you shift culture and behavior while also effectively managing resources, people and ideas? What are the first steps to creating an effective team where everyone is on the same page? How do you manage those inevitable “itchy-scratchy” moments? The goal of this workshop is to provide you with tools to put evidence-based Science of Team Science (SciTS) research into practice with your team(s). This foundational knowledge will provide you with a variety of insights, skills, and resources you can take back to your team(s) and immediately put into practice. (FYI - Advanced topic workshops coming in 2026)
