Research Position in Computational and Climate Archaeology

University of Bern

 

The Prehistory Department of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, associated at the Oeschger Centre of Climate Change (OCCR) at the University of Bern, Switzerland, is searching for an outstanding and motivated Computational Archaeologists to explore the response of prehistoric communities to climate-driven hazards and environmental changes. The aim is to research how cultural, economic and social diversities in space and time led to specific vulnerabilities and resilience strategies, from foragers to farming communities. The position provides an excellent opportunity to specialize in the dynamically evolving and impactful field of climate archaeology, computational archaeology, archaeological and paleoclimatic data modelling as well as time series statistics in an international and interdisciplinary research environment in the scope of the HORIZON-project “Past-to-Future: Towards fully Paleo-informed Future Climate Projections” of the Cluster 5 “Climate, Energy, Mobility” funding programme. The Swiss part of the project is funded by the SERI (State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation).

Interdisciplinary Internship Opportunity (paid)

Are you interested in engaging in an interdiscriplinary research project at the forefront of the life sciences and engineering? Then you are the right person to be involved in the new project “ExtraVolt: modulating extravasation of inflammatory cells across the blood-brain barrier via electric stimulation”, under the joint supervision of Dr. Diego Ulisse Pizzagalli and Prof. Britta Engelhardt at TKI in Bern.
The project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and aims at exploring the usage of electric pulses to prevent inflammatory cells from entering into the central nervous systems, potentially opening a new approach to control neuroinflammation.
By combining a microfluidic “on chip” model of the blood brain barrier (BBB), microscopy methods to capture T cell motility, AI and computer vision based methods for data analysis, the project would allow the candidate to expand skills at the intersection of several disciplines including engineering, biomedicine and informatics.

Director of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research OCCR and Professor in Climate or Climate Impact Science

The Director of the Oeschger Centre OCCR assumes leadership in the academic development and operational affairs of the OCCR and the Graduate School of Climate Sciences, University of Bern. The OCCR (https://www.oeschger.unibe.ch/) is an internationally renowned strategic Centre of the University of Bern engaged in interdisciplinary climate and climate impact research at the intersections of natural, social, economic, legal and health sciences with about 40 professors from five faculties. The Graduate School of Climate Sciences (https://www.oeschger.unibe.ch/studies/) offers a specialized MSc and PhD program. The OCCR provides a vibrant, stimulating, supportive and inclusive environment to carry out world-leading research and education.

 

Tasks

Duties as OCCR Director include academic and operational leadership and development of the OCCR and the Graduate School, leading the Management Centre, participating in academic services at all levels, and liaising with the 40 research groups (professors) of the OCCR, with their Departments and Faculties, and with national and international bodies. The professor further develops her/his own scientific profile, leads her/his own research group and is involved in teaching and supervising. The profile of the research group is flexible and may range from climatology, meteorology, climate physics, statistical climatology, climate geology, plant ecology, paleoecology, paleoclimatology, economic geography of climate change to climate impact research or similar. Command of one of the national languages and familiarity with the Swiss academic landscape is an advantage. The professor and her/his research group are hosted at one of the institutes of the Faculty of Science.

Senior Director, RIC

Northwestern University

 

The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University has committed to developing the world’s leading institute on complexity science with a focus on business research through the newly created Ryan Institute on Complexity (RIC).  The RIC will comprise a revolutionary research lab designed to change the way business, markets and societal issues are studied, combining multidisciplinary talents and quantitative sciences in new ways to tackle bigger problems faster. The RIC will place Kellogg and Northwestern at the forefront of solving increasingly complex societal, business, and market challenges by harnessing the power of big data and artificial intelligence.  The RIC was recently funded by a $25M gift from the Ryan Family Foundation and is in the stage of forming its administrative structure.

The Senior Director of the Ryan Institute on Complexity (RIC) will focus on providing strategic leadership, attracting novel funding streams, and supporting faculty in their research and curricular endeavors within the Institute and its research centers and laboratories.  The Senior Director will work closely with the Faculty Co-directors of the Institute and the home institution for grants and awards. 

Please note: Occasional weekends and evenings as requested and with some possible travel, as required.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Strategic Planning and Fundraising

  • Partner with Faculty Co-directors to provide the strategic direction of the Institute in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with complex and changing initiatives and priorities.
  • Provide oversight and direction for high-priority projects and initiatives for the Institute.
  • Attract novel funding streams and grant funding utilizing collaborative efforts with various grant funding institutions.
  • Write, edit, and develop new funding proposals to support the initiatives of the Institute.

 

Programmatic and Operational Leadership

  • Partner with Faculty Co-directors to create a governance structure for the Institute, hire staff, and foster a culture of strong organizational performance.
  • Oversee the management of the RIC staff, researchers, faculty, and visiting scholars.
  • Direct operations of the Institute and drive efficiency.
  • Oversees the Institute’s annual budgeting and financial management processes.

 

External Engagement, Communication and Outreach

  • Build research collaborations internally across Northwestern and externally with related organizations and associates to further the RIC as a globally recognized Institute.
  • Leverage the RIC platform to encourage local and global participation through signature conferences and visiting scholars. 
  • Collaborate with alumni, industry leaders, and other partners to bring real world examples and experience to the labs.
  • Oversee all Institute communications, including the website, newsletters, and social media to further the Institute’s brand and reputation.
  • Represents Kellogg to external audiences of potential participants, partners, and supporters, working with a wide variety of clients and partners to ensure the Ryan Institute is at the center of quantitative approach to problem-solving on campus, locally and globally. 

 

Faculty & Research Support

  • Launch and execute curricular courses/programs in Executive Education and/or the MBA or PhD programs, as opportunities arise.
  • Hire, on-board, and support visiting experts and associate faculty, researchers, and scholars.
