Die td Academy informiert u.a.

New collections of td-related resources

The ITD conference made it evident: the number of collections of td-related resources (tools, methods, guidelines, principles, annotated bibliographies) is constantly growing. The td-net toolbox features two of them: the “td Academy and the two open access books “Transdisziplinär und transformativ forschen”. They serve the German-speaking community with contextualized method descriptions. We wonder: which other language-specific method-expertise are we missing out? Please send us your favourite collections of td-related resources in French, Spanish and German td-methods@scnat.notexisting@nodomain.comch!

td-net says again goodbye and hello!

This time, we say goodbye to Lydia Moreno. Lydia has been the heart of all communication from td-net. She had the opportunity to concentrate on her work at the > Daylight Academy, where the skills she acquired in td-net hopefully will bear fruit. We thank Lydia for her good work and fantastic support and are looking forward to enlightening cooperation in the future.

On the other hand we are happy to welcome Ursula Schöni in our team. She plays an integral role in several forums of the Platform Science and Policy, as she works for td-net as well as for Swiss Biodiversity Forum and the Forum Landscape, Alps, Parks. With her journalistic background she will take over everything related to communication like td-Info and Website. Ursula will support the office wherever a hand is needed. Due to this change, summer issues may be shorter in this summer season.

td-net says goodbye and hello!

This month, we say goodbye to our long-time colleague Gabriela Wülser. Gabriela has been responsible for transdisciplinary competencies and methods for knowledge co-production in heterogeneous teams. She substantially contributed to building up our online toolbox. She now moved to the Swiss Academy of Sciences SCNAT to establish a new initiative on sustainability research. She is happy to have td-net on board as one of the new initiative's key collaboration partners. Gabriela holds a doctorate in philosophy of science and empirical science studies - on sustainability research - from ETH Zurich. We thank her very much for her good work and support, and look forward to further collaboration!

At the same time, we are happy to introduce Sibylle Studer, who has already taken over the lead of the project "Methods and tools for co-producing knowledge" from Gabriela. Sibylle studied Social Anthropology, Management&Economics and International Relations at the University of Zurich with field visits in Togo and Bolivia. After having completed her PhD in nonprofit management, she was involved in policy research for the Competence Center for Research in Energy, Society and Transition (SCCER CREST) and worked in interdisciplinary teams at Interface Policy studies Research Consulting. She is conversant with different stakeholder- and disciplinary perspectives on methods and scientific standards and looks forward to supporting the research community in its attempt to make research more societally relevant. Welcome to the team!

New in the td-net Toolbox: Theory of change

A theory of change (ToC) is a model of a change process. It provides a description and explanation of how and why an activity or a set of activities (such as a project or program) is expected to lead or contribute to a process of change. A ToC is not a single theory but a set of theories that describes and explains the multiple steps in a change process. The approach recognizes that socio-ecological systems are complex, and that causal processes are often non-linear with multiple interactions and feedback loops. The method has been provided by Rachel Claus & Brian Belcher.

Training workshop on transdisciplinary research with LIRA 2030

This year’s LIRA 2030 training workshop on transdisciplinary research took place in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire with 32 early career researchers from 14 African countries. The training had a focus on enabling participants to design and conduct their own research project. Short inputs on theory, methodology and methods of transdisciplinary research as baseline and videos and presentations of existing TD projects as illustrations were introduced as fundament for a series of interactive exercises on important steps along the transdisciplinary research process, conducted in various settings, such as reflections and work on the own project, group tasks, plenary discussions and role play. Some of the exercises were based on td-net’s toolbox for co-producing knowledge, e.g. actor constellation and three types of knowledge exercises. Td-net was engaged in this training workshop for the third consecutive year and also contributes to the ongoing development of training and coaching activities within the LIRA 2030 programme.

Publications addressing transdisciplinarity are steadily increasing

Every year, td-net observes the publication activities in the field of inter- and transdisciplinarity. With "transdisciplinar*" and "interdisciplinar*" as search words, we perform a topic search (within: title, abstract, author keywords, Keywords Plus®) in the Web of Science database and present the numbers of publications chronologically in charts. In the recent years, the number of publications show an upward trend. Have a look at our publication radar to see the second chart, displaying the results for „interdisciplinarity“.

NEW in the td-net Toolbox: Outcome Spaces Framework

The outcome spaces framework provides a structure to reflect on, and classify participants’ preferred outcomes in a transdisciplinary project in a differentiated way. Three key realms of transdisciplinary outcome spaces are distinguished – situation, knowledge and learning – elaborated as (1) an improvement within the situation or field of inquiry, (2) the generation of relevant stocks and flows of knowledge, including scholarly knowledge and other societal knowledge forms (3) mutual and transformational learning by researchers and research participants to increase the likelihood of persistent change. The method has been provided by Cynthia Mitchell & Dena Fam.
