Coronavirus: Welcome to the digital world

The Federal Council’s highest priority is to protect the public. It has declared that an ‘extraordinary situation’ exists in Switzerland. Everyone is affected and must now act responsibly.

Since Monday the td-net team started working in the home office and has to develop new work routines. We have thus arrived entirely in the digital age. We apologise if projects or responses are therefore delayed. However, we do not want to make any concessions in terms of quality.

The run of the tdMOOC is not in question, please register here.

Coronavirus

In view of current developments, the Executive Board of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences has introduced a number of measures which are effective immediately for the network of academies and other organisations active in the House of Academies. This applies in particular to meetings and events.

In the case of td-net this will affect all projects and events carried out with partner institutions as well as the U Change funding programme.

We would like to take this opportunity to refer once again to the digital online course on the principles of transdisciplinary research, which starts at the end of March. The course has been developed together with several partner universities in Switzerland. The run of the course is not affected by the corona measures. [Registration]

Innovative co-produced open online course starts 30 March 2020

Together with seven universities and institutes of higher education, and the Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries, td-net coordinated and co-produced the first massive open online course (MOOC) on transdisciplinary research.
The course presents transdisciplinary research as a living experience. With a basis on sound theoretical and methodological background, five outstanding projects illustrate promising different ways of dealing with complex societal challenges.
We are convinced, that students, researchers and practitioners from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to learn how to do research that helps to overcome societal challenges. Granting open access to this course provides a unique leverage point to increase access and extending reach equitably across the higher education landscape globally. Besides self-study and exchange with learners from all parts of the world, the course can be integrated in lectures, courses, and trainings. Take the opportunity, the course inscription is open now and free.

Die td Academy informiert u.a.

New collections of td-related resources

The ITD conference made it evident: the number of collections of td-related resources (tools, methods, guidelines, principles, annotated bibliographies) is constantly growing. The td-net toolbox features two of them: the “td Academy and the two open access books “Transdisziplinär und transformativ forschen”. They serve the German-speaking community with contextualized method descriptions. We wonder: which other language-specific method-expertise are we missing out? Please send us your favourite collections of td-related resources in French, Spanish and German td-methods@scnat.notexisting@nodomain.comch!

ITD-Alliance founded!

As an important step to further strengthen the ITD communities’ abilities to address the grand societal challenges, the Alliance for Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (ITD-Alliance) was founded at the ITD2019. The Alliance aims at linking the growing but often dispersed networks, organisations and individuals, as well their initiatives, experiences and offers in inter- and  transdisciplinary research and education. The Alliance is a home base for inter- and transdisciplinary institutions and individuals. It offers institutional and individual memberships, highlights the amazing work of the communities, enables to bring forward specific aspects of ID/TD in working groups, helps to find potential partners for research and education, and, by joining forces, it aims to leverage the power of ID/TD communities to become an even stronger voice in research and policy. More information can be found on the website of the ITD Alliance (in process of being set up). Become a member and promote the Alliance in your institution!

td-net says goodbye and hello!

This month, we say goodbye to our long-time colleague Gabriela Wülser. Gabriela has been responsible for transdisciplinary competencies and methods for knowledge co-production in heterogeneous teams. She substantially contributed to building up our online toolbox. She now moved to the Swiss Academy of Sciences SCNAT to establish a new initiative on sustainability research. She is happy to have td-net on board as one of the new initiative's key collaboration partners. Gabriela holds a doctorate in philosophy of science and empirical science studies - on sustainability research - from ETH Zurich. We thank her very much for her good work and support, and look forward to further collaboration!

At the same time, we are happy to introduce Sibylle Studer, who has already taken over the lead of the project "Methods and tools for co-producing knowledge" from Gabriela. Sibylle studied Social Anthropology, Management&Economics and International Relations at the University of Zurich with field visits in Togo and Bolivia. After having completed her PhD in nonprofit management, she was involved in policy research for the Competence Center for Research in Energy, Society and Transition (SCCER CREST) and worked in interdisciplinary teams at Interface Policy studies Research Consulting. She is conversant with different stakeholder- and disciplinary perspectives on methods and scientific standards and looks forward to supporting the research community in its attempt to make research more societally relevant. New in the td-net Toolbox: Theory of change

A theory of change (ToC) is a model of a change process. It provides a description and explanation of how and why an activity or a set of activities (such as a project or program) is expected to lead or contribute to a process of change. A ToC is not a single theory but a set of theories that describes and explains the multiple steps in a change process. The approach recognizes that socio-ecological systems are complex, and that causal processes are often non-linear with multiple interactions and feedback loops. The method has been provided by Rachel Claus & Brian Belcher.

Training workshop on transdisciplinary research with LIRA 2030

This year’s LIRA 2030 training workshop on transdisciplinary research took place in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire with 32 early career researchers from 14 African countries. The training had a focus on enabling participants to design and conduct their own research project. Short inputs on theory, methodology and methods of transdisciplinary research as baseline and videos and presentations of existing TD projects as illustrations were introduced as fundament for a series of interactive exercises on important steps along the transdisciplinary research process, conducted in various settings, such as reflections and work on the own project, group tasks, plenary discussions and role play. Some of the exercises were based on td-net’s toolbox for co-producing knowledge, e.g. actor constellation and three types of knowledge exercises. Td-net was engaged in this training workshop for the third consecutive year and also contributes to the ongoing development of training and coaching activities within the LIRA 2030 programme.
